  • Hi I enjoyed your article on weapons, the view of the ballista on the wall Gate 6 you notice it does not have a snout, ball throwing Ballistae had a carriage with a cubeical box with the top and front gone throwing the ball or group of balls.  You could fire an arrow crosbow bolt fashion, but clasic Roman Balistae have a snout.

Interesting trivia Skene artiliary was tuned by striking the skein top and bottom and adjusting tightness until the tone is  the same, two arm Ballistae the two skeings were then tuned until they had the same tone left and righ top and bottom.  Roman artillary men were often musicians with an ear for tone.

This is a drawing of a Scorpion If you click on the I you go to the drawing's page or click on the drawing then click on the icon for more information.  I've noticed the drawings I've checked do not have Information, source, or copyright data.  The best way is to post the drawing using the contribute photo option fill in Information and chose copyright info from the list, this art you see is mine thus posted by artist, most shoud be copyrighted fair use unlessyou are the artist or have permission to use on the Wiki.  If you post an image while wrighting an article you can fill in the information and mention the coyright there, I like to include a link to the source too.  The Scorpion was Julius Caesar's favorite artillary with a ball and socet joint can be aimed.  Note firing mechanism and sights are my own and would not be on a classical weapon, although the twin arm for fast cranking is roman, larger balistae had a windless and some scorpions used a windless.  I copied Vitruvious in the discription with the 3' arrow calculation so you know the drawing is based on ancient source Vitruvious a contempoary with Caesar Agustus.  Enjoy:
